Abstract

The segregation process of sulphide-oxide copper ore from the Santa Rosalia ore body in Mexico has been described. Despite the fact that copper mostly occurs as sulphides, the ore is very difficult to float. This is a result of the small grain size of the sulphides, their oxidation and the presence of considerable quantities of clay minerals. Also, the raw ore is only segregated to a small extent, since copper sulphides do not react with gaseous HCl. Oxidizing-roasting of the ore at a temperature of 800°C results in the formation of copper oxides. By segregating the ore thus oxidized with the addition of 1% NaCl and 1.5% coal at a temperature of 770°C, concentrates with a copper content of 15.8% and a recovery of 79.7% are obtained. Among other metals occurring in the ore, only silver undergoes segregation and its recovery exceeds 70%. The product of the segregation of this ore is cuprous sulphide rather than metallic copper. The reason for this unusual segregation is the presence of alkalic earth metal sulphates, CaSO4 in particular. The nature of the relationship between the process parameters and the segregation results leads to the assumption that the production of copper sulphides resembles the formation of metallic copper. A detailed mechanism for the synthesis of cuprous sulphide is the subject of current investigation.
